Niger has stunning natural beauty, particularly in the mountain ranges in the north of the country, but it is also home to some of Africa's most dangerous terrorist groups, such as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) and Boko Haram, both of which have their headquarters in Niamey, Niger. Northern Niger is part of the Sahara, with vast expanses of rocky, sandy wilderness, broken only by occasional oases. Here on the banks of the river you can see and visit the only inhabited island in Niger. The white fish found in Niger, called "niger fish," is plentiful and delicious and is eaten by the locals.
